Sarajevo Tunnel … The Tunnel of Hope

I left the place with a story …a wonderful one to remember and learn from  … a story of war, struggle  and above all Hope ….My visit to The Tunnel of Hope in Sarajevo was something different , an experience I never had before . according to many travel websites , Many world travelers recommended the visit to this place, So I had it on my list and glad that I did !

Many of you know that Bosnia and Herzegovina have been into a harsh war that left behind many casualties and destroyed a whole country  . But each war leaves Behind alot that we all  remember, see, always think of  and learn from  ..Join me to learn about The Tunnel of Sarajevo …..

What about the Tunnel ? During the Siege of Sarajevo during Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995, the Sarajevo Tunnel was constructed by the besieged citizens of Sarajevo ( near the airport ) in order to link the city of Sarajevo, which was entirely cut-off by Serbian forces ! it was dug by Bosnian volunteers working in 8-hour shifts , starting from January 1993 and was completed in mid 1993 . The tunnel was used to move food, weapons  and humanitarian aid to come to the city, and people to get out.

The tunnel was 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in height and about 1m in width, and ran for approximately 960 metres (3,150 ft) in length. During the time it was used, it is estimated that 20 million tons of food entered the city, and 1 million people passed in and out of it.

in that small underground room we watched a short movie on  the war and the tunnel ..Let me show you around that little room …
